Description
Very similar to its cousin ‘Major Wheeler’ but listed as heat hardy to USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 11, the ‘Honey Coral’ Honeysuckle is a North American native with a very long bloom cycle that starts with a massive flower show in spring and then off and on to frost in fall. In more mild winters here in our north central Georgia gardens we see blooms on ours even during warmer period through the winter months. The hummingbirds are irresistibly attracted to its showy bright reddish orange flowers that are filled with rich, honey-like nectar. Unlike the aggressive and invasive Japanese honeysuckle species, Honey Coral is a well-behaved vine that is easy to manage and train to grow on arches, arbors, fence and rails, posts and poles, trellises and other support structures. This beauty will not cling to walls and other surfaces, however will grow up and on just about anything that provides its vines something to twine around. The hummingbirds will thank you all season long for planting this one!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 10 feet or more tall or long and 2 to 3 feet wide, Honey Coral Honeysuckle is an absolute must and one of the BEST honeysuckle for hummingbird gardens! It is ideal for use to climb along the top of fences, on a trellis, on a pole, post or mailbox, over an arch, arbor or pergola, or any other structure that will provide something for its vines to twine around.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 6 feet apart to cover fences or other structures
Growing Preferences
Honey Coral Honeysuckle is easily grown in average, moist but well-drained soils and full sun to light shade. The vine produces more flowers and is more vigorous in full sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and morning sun is needed to dry dew from the morning from the leaves, which prevents powdery mildew. It is quite drought tolerant when established and hardy in USDA Zones 4a-11 Find Your Zone
