Description
Back in 1985 Jelitto Seeds introduced ‘Magnus’, which since has been considered by many as the best Echinacea on the market. Now, Jelitto has released ‘Magnus Superior’, an improved cultivar with darker lavender petals, a larger and more brilliant orange-bronze cone, darker and sturdier stems, and more consistent growth. The flowers begin appearing in late spring to early summer and continue throughout summer above mounds of dark green lanceolate leaves. Drought tolerant when established and deer resistant, this is a beautiful North American native species for attracting wildlife to the garden or as a cut flower. One than can be grow almost anywhere in the country (Zones 4a-9b), Magnus Superior is perfect in a perennial border, meadow garden or along sunny to lightly shaded woodland borders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Magnus Superior Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded perennial gardens, meadows and woodland borders. Combines beautifully with Rudbeckia, Coreopsis and other summer blooming perennials. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, wildflower gardens and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 1.5 to 2 feet apart for groupings
Growing Preferences
Magnus Superior Coneflower is very easy to grow. It is a highly adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. It will grow in most any average soil that is moist to somewhat dry and well-drained. It flowers best in full sun but will also do well and bloom in part shade. We suggest a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Spent flowers can be removed through the long bloom season. That said, spent flowers/seed heads can be left on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds.
