Description
Winner of the Fleuroselect Gold Medal Award, ‘Prairie Splendor’ is a showstopping native Coneflower selection with very large 4 to 5 inch diameter flowers that start coming two weeks earlier than the species in late spring to early summer continuing into fall! The flowers sport rose-pink slightly-drooping petals surrounding a contrasting, prominent orange-brown center cone. A more compact Echinacea, the flowers rise 18 to 24 inches tall above a mound of attractive, dark green leaves. Butterflies, hummingbirds and other beneficial pollinators love the flowers, and the birds love the seeds. So make sure to leave some spent flowers on the plant towards the end of the flowering season. The long-lasting flowers are also excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. A very hardy and showy flowering perennial that will return year after year in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Prairie Splendor Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in perennial and sunny woodland borders and garden beds. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, wildflower gardens and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for groupings or mass plantings; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Prairie Splendor Coneflower is very easy to grow. It is a highly adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought (when established), heat, humidity and poor soil. It will grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It has good drought tolerance once established. It flowers heaviest in full sun but will also perform and bloom good in part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Spent flowers can be removed through the long bloom season. That said, spent flowers/seed heads can be left on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds.
