How To Plant & Care For Muhly Grass
Description
One of North America’s most beautiful and adored ornamental grasses, Undaunted Ruby Muhly Grass was originally discovered in 2003 from a population of Muhlenbergia reverchinii growing in the wild in north central Texas. As with its cousin Pink Muhly Grass, it is a long-lived, hardy perennial grass with fine-textured soft green foliage throughout the growing season. It forms a well-behaved mound to 30 inches and equally as wide that becomes covered in a cloud-like profusion of pinkish-red flowers in late summer through fall. When backlit by sunlight the flower effect is breathtaking, like a crimson halo hovering over the plant. Expanded trials have established its cold hardiness to USDA Zone 5 (-20F) and heat tolerance to Zone 10b, making it hardy over much of North America. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, Undaunted Ruby thrives in most soils including alkaline clay, and adapts to water-logging as well as drought. In the wild it often grows on hardpan that is briefly saturated and then dries out entirely. Excellent as an accent and truly stunning in groupings or massed.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump to 2.5 feet tall in flower and equally as wide, Undaunted Ruby Muhly Grass is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in small to large groupings in sunny landscape borders. Excellent on embankments, hillsides and slopes, where its roots act as a soil stabilizer for erosion control. Makes a nice centerpiece in combination container gardens and is a fine addition to rock gardens, ornamental grass gardens and the Xeriscape (low water need). A lovely display for any sunny spot!
Suggested Spacing: 2 feet apart for solid borders or mass plantings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Undaunted Ruby Muhly Grass is easy to grow in most any moist to dry well-drained soil of average to low fertility, even alkaline clay soil. It appreciates a little pampering the first year with adequate food and water to get its root system established. After that it takes off on its own and is exceptionally drought-tolerant when established. Full sun is preferred for best flowering however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. We suggest at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. The previous years foliage can be cut back to ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring.
